After decades of having it drummed into our head how healthy fruits and vegetables are and how you can't have a balanced diet without them, here we are with the facts staring us in the face and we are unable (or unwilling) to give them credence.

I was sitting at our Shabbat table with good friends. Herb and Jane Danowit. He is a hospitalist and head of intensive care and she is a pediatrician. He was asking how my diet is going and told me that he had just read a study that links fructose with pancreatic cancer. He concluded with "Steve Jobs was a Fruitarian."

It used to be that back in the day, that everyone knew that certain crops appeared only in their season. That we'd eat fruit for a few weeks in the spring like strawberries and then for 6 to 8 weeks in the fall the fruits tree would supply us with their bounty.

That all changed when we could tap into the world's markets (it's always summer somewhere), and enjoy the produce from other countries. I remember in the 70's in Israel when Strawberries were in season for about three weeks and Cherries where available for my grandmother to make her liquor for only two.

Now when I go to the market I can find a cornucopia of anything and everything in the fruit market. And having been under the mistaken assumption that it was all so healthy, being filled with all those vitamins and minerals, I'd buy more than 20 pounds of fruit a week to feed my family (I have a large fruit loving family). Not to mention the gallons of orange juice, grapefruit juice and ice tea (sweetened with high fructose corn syrup). I would only buy junk drinks like soda for "special occasions" like Shabbat. Somehow in my mind I didn't think that the ice tea was as bad as the soda. The problem is, that till now no one informed us about the double edged sword of all that Fructose.

By now if you've found this web site you know about the "Warburg Effect". That Cancer cells are cells who's Mitochondria is damaged. They can only thrive and reproduce through fermentation, which means sugar. This was all predicted in 1971 by a brilliant British biochemist called John Yudkin, in a book titled, "Pure, White and Deadly".

This is a study showing rats fed fructose for 8 weeks, (their metabolism is seven times faster than ours but that's only 8 weeks!!) developed metabolic syndrome with increased blood pressure and impaired vascular relaxation. (How many doctors will tell you to get off the orange juice when they see that your blood pressure is up, or do they just put you on diuretics?)

Below is Dr. Rober Lustig UCSF Division of Pediatric Endocrinology. He gave two classes four years apart where he pinpoints the roots of metabolic syndrome in younger and younger populations and it's causes.

The following are lay articles that touch on some of the above points.

Fructose Metabolism (You can skip over the middle technical part and read the beginning and end for info.)

Most young mothers I speak with are worried about their children ingesting artificial sweeteners, the truth is that maybe they should be more concerned about the real McCoy.
