IO (Immuno-Oncology), Is it a breakthrough?
We've known for a long time that some cancers develop from viral infections.
At the latest American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) conference this year IO took center stage with more trials and new experimental vaccines in the pipe line then there have been in decades. It seems that the Pharmaceutical companies finally see the billion dollar potential of working with the immune system instead of destroying it through chemo. They must also have figured out from their internal statistics that cytotoxic chemotherapy is an overall failure.
I guess this is where they divide Oncology in to four specialties.
IO - Immuno Oncology - Treating Cancer by aiding the immune system to zero in on cancer that has found a way to hide from the immune system.
Metabolic Therapy - Treating Cancer through diet and drugs to starve the cancer.
Interventional Radiology - using minimally invasive techniques to ablate the cancer.
Oncology - Poisoning and irradiating patients in hope of killing their cancer without killing them.
