Morcellation

It is estimated that, 50,000 to 75,000 women a year undergo hysterectomy's by Morcellators (mostly for uterine fibroids). This "minimally-invasive technology that chops up a fibroid-laden uterus for easy removal through a laparoscope, can carry a very high risk. While the vast majority of uterine mases are indeed benign fibroids, today's it's estimated that one in every 350 women have some malignacy mixed in with their fibroids. The problem is that these women may not be identified before morcellation because the symptoms and imaging findings in patients with begnign fibroids and uterine sarcomas can be identical.

In an as yet unpublished December paper, Harvard Medical School and Boston University doctors estimated uterine morcellation "results in hundreds of avoidable deaths each year."Here is the warning by the FDA.
